In the News: 250 Acorns to Oaks Project Takes Root
Planting for tomorrow.
The Rye Sustainability Committee has launched the 250 Acorns to Oaks initiative, a community-driven effort to restore and expand the native oak population in Rye. Volunteers are collecting acorns from the city’s oldest oak trees and nurturing them into saplings for future planting on public and private properties.
Councilmember and former Rye Sustainability Committee Chair James Ward is leading the project, inspired by the importance of oak trees as keystone species that support hundreds of other forms of life. The goal is to have 250 saplings adopted and planted by 2026 to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Rye Sustainability Committee, Friends of Rye Nature Center, the Little Garden Club of Rye, and the Rye Sustainability Foundation.
